Very good things are happening with this brilliant project, initiated by Carmina Masoliver.

Poetry and Paint is a project that aims to merge visual art with written word. Carmina has put together an anthology (which includes some of my poems) and the launch for this, as well as an exhibition, will take place on 30 March. Check here for more deets- I'll be performing on the night too!

I illustrated Selina Nwulu's poems in the new Poetry & Paint Anthology. The launch event is on March 30th. Check http://poetryandpaint.wordpress.com/2013/02/10/event-flyer/ for more info. It's near Old Street tube station. Here's the illustration I did, and the flyer below: Zofia Walczak Poetry & Paint Illustration 2013

The Word House April 2012, a set on Flickr.

These are my photos from another great Word House night. The featured poets were Mark Grist, Sabrina Mahfouz and Emma Jones. They were absolutely awesome. All the headliners also happened to be comedy geniouses.  Mark Grist is the poet who got quite a few people might recognise from when this video went a bit viral:

Enjoy!

My photos from the We Are Poets premiere at Curzon Soho and The Word House after party on February 15th 2012, featuring Dean Atta, Anthony Anaxagorou, Tim Wells and Emma Jones. Read my review of We Are Poets here.

Kate Tempest is a poet. And she is amazing.  I last saw her more recently at the Bussey building in Peckham, and got pretty overwhelmed, maybe because I really needed to hear what she was saying at the time.  Here’s a video I found on youtube of one of the poems she performed.  I hesitate to post up here, because I think you have to see her live to experience the full energy of her words.

These are some of the photos I took for The Word House, a great new spoken word night at the Gallery Cafe  in Bethnal Green.  The night was headlined by the brilliant Inua Elams, Christian Watson and John Berkavitch, all proceeds going to Oxjam.

Of the open mic-ers, two in particular stood out: Emma Jones with a hilarious poem about the kind of white middle class people who move to Clapham, and Captain of the Rant with an anarchic, wonderful poem about reclaiming romance. Read More

I’d like to think you’ll find We Are Poets incredibly powerful even if you don’t feel as passionately about spoken word as I do.  It’s an energetic, passionate and positive film that breaks down out of touch pigeon hole portrayals of young people in mainstream media.  It’s been two months since I saw it, and writing about it now is still giving me goosebumps of inspiration. The Word House, a brand new spoken word night in London, had its launch night on the 16th of July.  It was a really atmospheric, relaxed night, set in the bright Gallery Cafe on a leafy street a few minutes away from Bethnal Green.  Awesome artists, and a truly mixed crowd.  As well as ending up as the official photographer for the night I wrote a short review for Urban Bards, a blog by the excellent music journalist Kieran Yates.  Have a read through the blog, I already expressed some love for it in my LV/Joshua Idehen Routes review, but seriously, have a read through and get to know.  Kieran can mainly be found writing for MTV, the Independent, the Guardian and Dazed and Confused among many others.  Here are some more photos, most of which you can also see onThe Word House’s facebook page.  Make sure you ‘like’ the page and don’t miss the next event.  All photos copyright Zofia Walczak etc.  You can see them all on my Flickrtoo, which I’m trying to start to use.

You might have heard me wittering on about Lyrix Organix for a while now on this blog and Twitter, ever since discovering this little gem last year.  I asked Lyrix founder Dan Tsu to give me a bit more background info on the not-for-profit live music/spoken word project. Read More

The Routes EP, featuring Joshua Idehen, is the debut album of South East London production trio LV, released on Blackdown’s Keysound imprint. LV are probably more known for their eclectic Hyperdub offerings, most recently the South African kwaito-inspired Boomslang in 2010, but Routes is a welcome follow up to LV’s previous but slightly more brooding Keysound 38 EP, and a return to their collaboration with prominent UK spoken word artist Joshua Idehen, who co-runs Poejazzi and fronts his own band, Benin City. Spoken word input on a 12-track dance album is guaranteed to make me excited and hopeful before I’ve barely heard a whisper, and thankfully it delivers in a more witty and sophisticated way than even expected.
